What is something interesting that happened to Handel?
In 1705, George Frideric Handel barely escaped with his life when he fled from Italy to avoid possible assassination. It was at approximately this time that he began to exhibit bizarre behavior. He would reportedly "run into the harpsichord and thump it and hollow loudly...[causing] the servants...[to] run up in a fright, thinking that he was suddenly seized with a fit." During one manic period he threw all of his servant's harpsichords out of the third floor window of his house. On another occasion, when offered some bread and butter, he threw it against the wall saying, "I cannot amuse myself with bread and butter." It is possible that Handel was bipolar and that his "fits" were the result of manic episodes.
