When did the best animated feature become a category?

The Best Animated Feature category at the Academy Awards was first introduced in 2001, for the 73rd Annual Academy Awards ceremony held in March 2001.

Before that, animated films were typically considered for the Best Picture category, with only a few exceptions being nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay.
