Tchaikovsky composed The Nutcracker in 1891-1892 in Klin, Russia, a town about 80 km northwest of Moscow. He began work on the ballet's music in late February or early March 1891 and completed the score by autumn 1891. The work received its premiere on 17 December 1892 (OS), at the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Russia, with the choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov.
