Why did baz luhrmann decide to keep Shakespeares language in Romeo and Juliet?

Baz Luhrmann did not keep Shakespeare's language in his 1996 adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. Luhrmann chose to use modern language and slang to make the story more accessible to a contemporary audience.
