How to Memorize a Paragraph

Memorizing text can be a daunting and difficult process. Repetition is the most common way to memorize words verbatim, but other techniques are useful as well. Committing an entire paragraph to memory can seem like an insurmountable task but with some time, practice and commitment to trying out different memorization techniques, you can recall and deliver a confident and well thought out speech.

Instructions

  1. Repetition

    • 1

Repeat the paragraph. Read it to yourself, and then read it aloud.

    • 2

Ask a friend to read the paragraph back to you so you hear it from someone other than yourself.

    • 3

Break the paragraph down into sentences, and read one sentence at a time out loud.

    Letter Memory

    • 4

Write down the first letter of each word in the paragraph. Allow some space between the letters within a sentence. Write in all punctuation as it appears in the original paragraph.

    • 5

Use the letters to recall the first letter of each word you have to recall in the paragraph.

    • 6

Look at the letters only when you are stuck on a particular word. Place the paper with the letters nearby so you can refer to it if you need to.
