What did Shakespeare mean by the word weird?

The word "weird" was originally pronounced "weerd" and came from the Old English word "wyrd," meaning "fate." In Shakespeare's time, the word was still used in its original sense, but it also began to take on a more negative connotation, meaning "strange" or "supernatural." In Macbeth, for example, the witches are referred to as "weird sisters," and their prophecies are seen as ominous and evil.
