Who is protagonist in the merchant of Venice?

The protagonist of The Merchant of Venice is Bassanio, a young Venetian gentleman. Bassanio is a friend of Antonio, a wealthy merchant, and is in love with Portia, a wealthy heiress from Belmont. Bassanio borrows money from Antonio in order to travel to Belmont and woo Portia. After winning Portia's hand in marriage, Bassanio returns to Venice with his new wife and reunites with Antonio.
