Visiting Mr. Spencer: Holden visits his former English teacher, Mr. Spencer, who is ill and confined to his bed. Holden talks with Mr. Spencer about literature, school, and his future plans.
Meeting Sally Hayes: Holden meets Sally Hayes, a girl he knew from school, at the Edmont Hotel in New York City. They go on a date to a nightclub and have dinner together, but Holden is disappointed when Sally becomes more interested in another man.
Attending a party at Ernie's: Holden goes to a party at the home of his classmate Ernie. He meets a number of people at the party, including an actress named Lillian Simmons and a wealthy man named Carl Luce. Holden feels uncomfortable and out of place at the party.
Visiting Carl Luce: Holden visits Carl Luce at his apartment, hoping to get some advice about his future. However, Carl is drunk and dismissive, and Holden leaves feeling even more lost and confused.
Sneaking into his parents' apartment: Holden returns home to New York City and sneaks into his parents' apartment late at night. He observes his younger sister, Phoebe, sleeping and leaves without waking her.
Going to the zoo with Phoebe: Holden meets up with Phoebe the next day and takes her to the zoo. They ride the carousel and talk about their lives. Holden reveals to Phoebe his dream of becoming a "catcher in the rye," someone who protects children from the harsh realities of the world.
Contemplating suicide: Holden becomes increasingly depressed and contemplates suicide. He even goes so far as to stand in front of a moving train, but he ultimately decides not to go through with it.
Seeking help: At the end of the novel, Holden is sent to a mental health institution for treatment. He is still struggling with his emotional and mental health, but he is beginning to come to terms with his experiences and find a way to move forward.
