Why is antigone not the tragic hero?
While Antigone is a compelling and complex character, she does not entirely fit the traditional definition of a tragic hero. The protagonist of a tragic hero is usually a morally upstanding individual whose downfall is caused by a fatal flaw or error in judgment. In the case of Antigone, her devotion to her family's honor and her defiance of the king's orders are the driving forces behind her actions, not a singular fatal flaw.
Creon, the antagonist, is the one with the fatal flaw, hubris - excessive pride and arrogance, leading to downfall. Sophocles' portrayal of Creon's character highlights the consequences of pride and stubbornness, demonstrating the tragic outcome when a leader disregards divine and moral laws.
