What happened to giles Corey in 1692?

In September 1692, Giles Corey was pressed to death by stones while undergoing trial in Salem, Massachusetts. He refused to enter a plea during his witchcraft trial, which was an attempt to avoid self-incrimination as a witch. By refusing to plead, he was subjected to peine forte et dure, a medieval English common law method of torture used to compel a defendant to enter a plea. Corey's case became infamous and remains one of the most well-known examples of this form of torture during the Salem witch trials.
