What is a symbol in drama?

In drama, a symbol is an object, person, place, or event that represents something beyond its literal meaning. Symbols can be used to create a deeper level of meaning in a play, to explore complex themes, or to create a sense of mystery and intrigue.

For example, in Shakespeare's play "Hamlet," the ghost of Hamlet's father could be interpreted as a symbol of Hamlet's inner turmoil and sense of duty to avenge his father's death. In Arthur Miller's play "The Crucible," the Salem witch trials could be interpreted as a symbol of the McCarthy hearings and the Red Scare in the United States.

Symbols can add richness and complexity to a play, and can help to create a more memorable and impactful theatrical experience.
