What happens to the courtier in The Lady or Tiger?

In the story "The Lady or the Tiger?" by Frank R. Stockton, when the courtier enters the final door it is ambiguous as to what was behind the door: if it was the lady or the tiger. The ending is intentionally left unresolved, adding suspense.
