Ashton was born in Liverpool and began his music career in the early 1960s. He formed the Mojo Men in 1964 and the band released several singles, including "Sit Down If You Want To" and "Shake My Tree." The Mojo Men were also known for their live performances, which often included Ashton performing acrobatic stunts.
In the late 1960s, Ashton left the Mojo Men to pursue a solo career. He released several solo albums, but none of them were commercially successful. In the 1970s, Ashton returned to the Mojo Men, and the band continued to perform until the late 1980s.
In 1989, Ashton was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He retired from music and moved to a nursing home. He died in November 2013 at the age of 67.
