Examples of stimuli from outside of the play's world (external):

- Sound effects, lights, music, projections

- An item of clothing, a symbol of rank or status, personal item, or money

- A piece of stage furniture, scenery piece

- Weather

- A character from the outside world

Examples of stimuli from from inside of the play's world (internal):

- A desire for power, control, status, affection

- A fear of poverty, pain, abandonment

- A love of art, music, or nature

- A quest for justice or revenge

- A struggle between good and evil
