* Aeschylus: Aeschylus, who came after Thespis, is considered the "father of tragedy." He introduced a second actor, further developing the dramatic dialogue and plot.
* Sophocles: Sophocles was born in the 5th century BC and built upon the foundations laid by Thespis and Aeschylus. He is known for his masterpieces like Oedipus Rex and Antigone.
Important Note: Ancient Greek theater was a very different form of theater than what we see today. There were no actresses, only male actors. Actors wore masks and costumes to represent different characters. Plays were performed in outdoor amphitheaters, often as part of religious festivals.
So, while Sophocles is a pivotal figure in the history of drama, he wasn't the first. Thespis gets that honor.
