New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts' summer program offers high school and pre-college students the opportunity to experience theatrical training in an intensive four-week curriculum. Students learn acting techniques for live theater and film. They can earn up to six college-level credits for participation. Classes include Acting Technique, Commercial Basics, Film and TV Basics, Stage Combat, Improvisation, Scene Study and Voice-Over Techniques. Students must apply for the program and participate in a phone interview. Auditions are not mandatory unless the student is applying for a scholarship to the program. Students may reside near the school at the St. George Residence Hall, which has chaperons and 24-hour security.
One of the best-known and best-regarded dramatic arts schools in the country, Yale University's Summer Conservatory can help the serious theater student to discover the craft of acting. Students participate in acting classes based on the Stanislavski approach, as well as basic preparation courses in voice and physical techniques. High school students in their junior or senior years are welcome, as are college students looking for extra training. Students should expect to attend classes from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday as well as occasional evening scene studies. This four-week program offers students the chance to earn two college credits. Application is necessary for admission, but no audition is required.
UCLA's summer camp and workshops give students ages 14 to 20 the chance to explore the craft of acting through a one-, two- or three-week course of study. Students attend classes weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with college program faculty. The school offers housing in UCLA's supervised residence halls. Acting camps include Sitcom Acting, Acting for the Stage, Acting for Movies and TV, Comedy Improv and College Audition Workshop. Students may earn up to two college credits for their participation (along with extra written work) at an additional fee.
The Atlanta Workshop Players is a professional children's theater in Georgia. The performing arts summer school program allows students ages 6 to 18 to train at a high level. Students take courses in Improv Comedy, Stage Combat, Classical Theater, TV/Film Acting, Theater and Musical Theater. The Workshop Players typically offers seven weeklong summer sessions with full-day and half-day options.
