A skit needs to have a driving idea or a scenario or topic that it is illustrating. In some skits, the theme might just be a punch line that comes at the end of the skit and the rest of the skit is designed to set up the punch line. Other times, the skit might be trying to demonstrate a particular lesson that a character learns or show the wrong way to do something. If you have had a skit assigned to you, you do not need to complete this step.
Assign each actor to a character in the skit. Give each character a name, age, gender and any other defining characteristics. These help the actors play the character roles well. Decide what the relationships between the characters are and what role each character has in the play. A skit often has a narrator who can set the scene and provide background information that is difficult to convey in such a short dramatic presentation.
The setting and props for a skit are often simple, but they add a lot to the story and can make it come alive. Depending on the situation, you might not have time to construct a set. However, you should set up chairs, a table and any other furniture you need in the correct arrangement. Also gather simple props and costumes, such as hats, wigs, books or bags. You do not need props or costumes, and in some situations you might not have time to get any, but if possible, use them to enhance the believability of the skit.
Depending on how much time you have to prepare the skit, this step might be more or less in depth. At the bare minimum, you need to define what happens in each part of the skit. For example, you might have two characters talking about a specific topic at the beginning, have the major conflict occur, have a scene that introduces more characters who try to help solve the conflict in a few ways, and bring the skit to a resolution. If your actors are good at improvisation, this bare-bones plot outline will be enough. However, if you have time and your actors need it, write out a script with each line to make sure the skit stays on track. You can also practice your skit before performing it.
