Why has horatio been asked to join the night watch?

In William Shakespeare's "Hamlet," Horatio is not asked to join the night watch. He is already a friend and confidant of Prince Hamlet and is part of Hamlet's inner circle. It is Horatio who witnesses the appearance of Hamlet's father's ghost and becomes a trusted advisor and companion to Hamlet throughout the play.
