The story begins in the late 19th century with the arrival of a young British couple, John Clayton III and his wife Alice, on the coast of Africa. They are traveling to the unexplored jungles of the Congo in search of adventure. Unfortunately, tragedy strikes when Alice is killed by a savage gorilla. John Clayton is left alone in the jungle, where he is taken in and raised by a tribe of apes.
