Juliet knew that her impending arranged marriage would take place while she was in this death-like state. It was important for Romeo to know about her plan so that he could return to Verona and free her from the tomb. Unfortunately, Romeo did not receive the letter detailing the plan and instead incorrectly assumed that Juliet had indeed died.
In despair, Romeo went to the Capulet tomb and, upon seeing his beloved, drank poison. When Juliet awoke from her deep sleep, she witnessed Romeo’s death and, unable to continue living without him, she used his dagger to stab herself.
