Jimmy Dean, the person

James Dean Sauls (August 10, 1928–June 13, 1988), known professionally as Jimmy Dean, was an American country music singer and television personality. He is best known for his role as Uncle Jesse Duke on the CBS television series The Dukes of Hazzard (1979–1985), and as the founder of the Jimmy Dean Sausage Company.

Dean was born in Olney, Texas, and began his career as a country singer in the early 1950s. He released several hit songs, including "Big Bad John" and "I.O.U.". In the late 1950s, he began hosting his own television show, The Jimmy Dean Show, which ran for several years.

In the 1960s, Dean founded the Jimmy Dean Sausage Company. The company became a huge success, and Dean eventually sold it to Sara Lee Corporation in 1984.

In addition to his career in music and business, Dean was also active in politics. He served as the mayor of Virginia Beach, Virginia, from 1976 to 1978.

Jimmy Dean died of lung cancer in 1988 at the age of 59. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2010.
