How did the Gang influence Johnny to kill Bob in outsiders?

In S E Hinton's novel "The Outsiders", Johnny did not kill Bob under the influence of the gang. it was johnny's spontaneous and self defensive reaction that led to Bob's death. Johnny acted alone out of fear and desperation when Bob attacked Ponyboy. the gang played no role in influencing johnny to commit the crime.
