Who invented the first cartoon?

The first animated cartoon is generally considered to be *Humorous Phases of Funny Faces*, created by American artist James Stuart Blackton and produced by Edison Manufacturing Company (now known as General Electric )in 1906 . It consisted of a series of hand-drawn sketches which were photographed one frame at a time and put together into an animated short of about three minutes in length with actors performing alongside animated sequences.
