He is the second-youngest of the protagonists and the younger brother of Ponyboy and Darrel Curtis. Sodapop is known for his sunny disposition and quick wit, and is often seen as the glue that holds the group of friends together.
Throughout the novel, Sodapop is involved in a number of actions, including:
- Working at a local gas station to support his family. Sodapop is a diligent worker, and takes pride in his job.
- Participating in the rumble between the Socs and the Greasers. Although he is afraid of physical violence, Sodapop feels a strong sense of loyalty to his friends, and is willing to fight to protect them.
- Consoling Ponyboy after the death of Johnny Cade. Sodapop is a source of comfort and support for his younger brother during this difficult time.
- Reconciling with Darrel after a brief estrangement. Sodapop's love for his brother is stronger than any disagreement, and he is able to forgive Darrel for hurting him.
- Leaving Ponyboy to join the U.S. Army. This is a difficult decision for Sodapop, but he feels it is the best way to support himself and his family.
