Was Eliza Doolittle a real person?
Eliza Doolittle is not believed to be a real person. While the character, as portrayed in George Bernard Shaw's play Pygmalion (and the subsequent musical My Fair Lady), is inspired by actual social conditions and class struggles of the day, there is no record or evidence of a historical figure corresponding to Eliza Doolittle. Shaw drew upon elements of his observations and fictionalized them to create the compelling narratives, characters, and social commentaries explored in his works. Therefore, Eliza Doolittle is considered a wholly fictional creation of George Bernard Shaw.
