How to Write a Funny Skit for Young Life Club

Young Life is a community organization usually based in high schools and middle schools where young people of Christian faith can come together, worship and have fun. According to the group's website, Young Life "believe[s] in the power of presence. Kids' lives are dramatically impacted when caring adults come alongside them, sharing God's love with them". Members often enjoy performing for one another at social gatherings and on occasion creating funny skits for the group. If you have been tasked with entertaining your Young Life group, or would like to someday, it is important to not only be funny but to present something appropriate. If you stick to your script, you'll have them bouncing off the walls.

Instructions

    • 1

Brainstorm different ideas on a piece of paper. Make a list of possible ideas or characters to base the skit on.

    • 2

Discuss with your group what kind of ideas for skits might appeal to the group. Vote on the entries from your list and eliminate a possibility each round. Take a final vote on the remaining two or three ideas.

    • 3

Assign a character to each member of the group. Let each member develop his or her own character before interacting with the entire group.

    • 4

Work on a group script out loud. Establish the set of characters and go to each member for their individual character's behaviors and characteristics. Write a reference list to refer to in case anyone gets lost.

    • 5

Develop a short summary of the scene to keep everyone on track. You should include a description of the action and what the main characters are trying to accomplish.

    • 6

Practice the skit several times so everyone can get their timing down. Make any alterations at the dialogue level after discussing it among the group.

    • 7

Run through the skit a final time. Highlight any physical or slapstick comedy that you are trying to relate to the audience. Ready yourselves for the actual performance.
