Comic Relief Fund-raising Ideas

Comic Relief is a charity created in 1985. Richard Curtis and Alexander Mendis, two British comedians started it in order to give famine relief to Ethiopia. It operates on what it calls the "Golden Pound Principle," meaning that every British pound donated goes to charity and not in maintaining the organization necessary for the charity. People not directly involved with the charity can hold their own fund-raisers at work and at home.
  1. Dress Up

    • One of the traditions of Comic Relief is Red Nose Day. People who have donated to the Comic Relief fund will receive a red clown nose that they can continue to wear for the rest of the day. Humor is the driving force behind the comic relief fund, so holding a funny dress-up contest can help raise awareness and money at the same time. Take the names of people interested in participating and hold a contest on Red Nose Day. Participants should come dressed up in the funniest costumes they can find, from coming in their pajamas to wearing suits of armor. Advertise the event, indicating its purpose and place a donation bucket at the entrance. Attendees vote for the funniest costume by placing money in each contestants donation bucket. The contestant with the most money wins. Make food and drinks available for purchase.

    Comedy Show

    • Another perfect fund-raising idea for Comic Relief is a comic show. Not only does it work with the context of Comic Relief and Red Nose Day, but it can provide the donators with something tangible for their donation: several hours of great comedy. Search through your workplace or school to find funny people. These can be people with funny stories, actual stand-up comedians or even improvisation comedy groups. Stand up comedians and improvisational groups are great because they are always looking for publicity and will often do charity work for little to no money. Advertise your event well in advance and charge $5 to attend. Place a donation bucket at the entrance for entrance fees and other donations. Make food and drinks available for all attendants. Try to make the show last at least three hours long in order to make the show available for more people.

    Hair Removal

    • Another humorous fund-raising idea is hair removal. This contest works great if the participants are known for long hair or having hairy arms and legs. The hair removal can be done in several ways. The easiest way to perform a hair removal is to simply shave the hair off the body. Hold a hair removal fund-raiser outside to avoid making a mess indoors. Participants can sit in chairs while people can donate money to get a chance to shave a person. Place sheets under the chairs to gather all the hair up safely. However, waxing hair can be an even more amusing way to remove hair. Waxing the arms and legs is messy and removing the wax can lead to lots of amused yelling. While it may seem a bit mean spirited, it is all for charity.
