Ideas for a Comic Relief Assembly

Comic Relief is a charity, originally created in Britain, that collects money via humorous programs and benefits to help the poor, homeless and those affected by disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. Many of the nation's leading comics take part in benefits throughout the year sponsored by the main charity. If you have a local Comic Relief benefit, there are ideas to make it fun without using A-list Hollywood talent.
  1. Stand Up Comedy

    • Comic Relief is renowned for its stand up comedy routines from many of the top talents in the industry. Smaller communities can have a hard time recruiting that tier of talent. You can contact the main charity and see if they might be able to have a comedian willing to visit for only air fare, hotel and expenses. You can also recruit any local comedians able to play. You can design a American Idol type stand up contest for amateurs.

    Improv Night

    • Improvisation sketches can be an entertaining way for people, without a stand up background but with a good sense of comic timing, to participate in a Comic Relief. You simply place them in funny situations and have them react in a funny way. The key is that nothing is planned and everyone thinks of everything as it happens. There is no script or outline provided before the actual event.

    Drag Queen Anything

    • There is nothing funnier than dressing up some of the most prominent members of the community in drag and having them prance around for their adoring public. Possible drag queen games include drag queen karaoke where they sing or lip sync to the top female hits of the day and drag queen Bingo where the callers are all dressed in drag.

    Worm Charming

    • Mud, dirt and worms, those words just scream funny Comic Relief benefit. Worm charming involves creating a grid out of a 3 by 3 yards area that is known to have worms. You may want to wet the area ahead of time to help convince the worms to come out. Teams are given a single plot on the grid and must "charm" worms out of the ground. This is done through sound. The contestants can stomp and scream the worms out. The one with the most worms at the end wins.
