Obtain all necessary licenses, permits and insurance. Your venture needs to be "by the books" so that it does not get shut down before it opens. Insurance can protect you in the case of a problem.
Create a budget. It is vital to carefully and realistically plan your costs and expenditures to ensure feasibility. Build in emergency funds in case you go over budget.
Rent or buy a space. Location is important because it can attract people with its visibility. When starting a comedy club, look for somewhere that is affordable and has the space you need for your club.
Plan the layout of your comedy club. Create an intimate atmosphere with tables and chairs close to the stage. Make certain that it adheres to Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines.
Purchase equipment for the nightclub. You will need a spotlight, a microphone, a microphone stand and a public announcement system. You will also need items related to food and drink orders, such as a cash register.
Fill the nightclub with furniture, such as tables, chairs and a bar. You may include soft couches, tall tables and decorations for the walls.
Stock the nightclub with supplies. You will need alcohol for the bar and whatever food or drink you will be serving. Purchase required materials such as serving plates, utensils, paper goods, condiments and bathroom supplies.
Hire staff. At the beginning you may be doing a great deal of the work; however, you are likely to need some support staff such as a cook (if you will be serving food), bartender and waitresses.
Book comedians. Talented individuals are constantly available to do comedy because up-and-coming comedians need a place to break into the business. Network with people you know, consult local schools and drama companies, and place advertisements to attract people.
Plan a calendar. You can include house comedians on a set schedule, guest performers and special events. An open mic night will help attract both new performers and new audience members.
Advertise your services. Get the word out there about your new venture. Spread information through word-of-mouth, print advertisements, flyers, radio spots, social networks and email.
Plan a grand opening. Make a special event to get your name there from the start.
