Jim Hawkins mother owns the Admirals Benbow Inn, where Billy Bones arrives one day requesting lodging and provisions. Jim serves as Billy's attendant, bringing him food and drinks and assisting him with any needs.

Realizing that Billy is in danger from pursuing pirates, Jim feels a sense of empathy for the old sailor and listens to his stories about the treasure he once hunted with Captain Flint. Billy trust Jim with his secret and asks him to deliver a letter to a lawyer named Dr Livesey.
