Who is Gilbert Sullivan?

Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan (13 May 1842–22 November 1900), known as Arthur Sullivan, was an English composer, best known for his 14 operatic collaborations with the dramatist W. S. Gilbert, including H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado.

Sullivan's music was influenced by the Savoy operas of Gilbert and Sullivan, the English glees and madrigals of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, and the music of Mozart and Mendelssohn. He also composed symphonies, concertos, and oratorios.

Sullivan was knighted in 1883 and was made a baronet in 1897. He died of heart disease in 1900 at the age of 58. He was buried in St Paul's Cathedral in London.

Arthur Sullivan is regarded as one of the greatest composers of British light music. His works are still performed and enjoyed around the world.
