What did Shakespeare base Hamlet off of?

Shakespeare is believed to have based Hamlet on a legendary Danish prince, Amleth, whose story appears in Gesta Danorum, a 12th-century work by Danish historian Saxo Grammaticus. The story bears some similarities to Shakespeare’s play, including a protagonist who feigns madness to exact revenge for his father’s murder by his uncle.
