The 39 Steps is the title of a 1915 novel by John Buchan. The novel is set in London and Europe, and involves the protagonist being framed for murder. The 39 Steps refers to a list of instructions which the protagonist must follow in order to foil the plot. The novel was adapted into a 1935 film of the same name, which is now considered a classic.
