William Shakespeare likely lived in Stratford-upon-Avon, England when he wrote his first play. He is widely believed to have been born in Stratford in 1564, and to have spent much of his life there. Although the exact date and location of his first play's composition are not known, it is thought that he began writing plays around the mid-1580s, just before his departure for London to pursue a career in the theater.
