Girlfriend & Boyfriend Songs

Love and romance have been steady lyrical themes in popular music since its jazz and blues beginnings. The rise of popular music aimed toward teenagers and young adults only furthered the tendency toward songs about love, girlfriends and boyfriends. Whether its sung by a '60s girl group or a punk band aping '60s girl groups, girlfriend and boyfriend songs have proven to be popular with mainstream audiences and the punk underground alike.
  1. Ashlee Simpson's "Boyfriend"

    • Pop starlet Ashlee Simpson, sister of Jessica Simpson and famous for singles such as "Pieces of Me" and "La La," released another love song, "Boyfriend," in 2005 off her album "I Am Me." The song hit number 19 on the U.S. charts. The lyrics are about a girl telling another girl that she didn't steal her boyfriend. Simpson sings the lyrics "Don't put words up in my mouth, I didn't steal your boyfriend." The song references an alleged incident in which Simpson "stole" Lindsay Lohan's boyfriend, actor Wilmer Valderrama. Simpson sings, "Hollywood sucks you in, But it won't spit me out." According to Simpson, "it's about taking something real life and making fun of it, making it fun."

    The Angels' "My Boyfriend's Back"

    • Sixties girl group The Angels, background vocalists on many records, released the single "My Boyfriend's Back" in 1963. The song became a No. 1 hit in the United States. Bob Feldman, Jerry Goldstein and Richard Gottehrer, a songwriting and production team that had hits such as "I Want Candy" and "Night Time" as The Strangeloves, wrote and produced "My Boyfriend's Back." Feldman witnessed an incident in which a girl was yelling at a boy in a leather jacket for telling lies about her. The girl said, "My boyfriend's back and you're gonna be in trouble" to the boy, which became the hook of the song.

The Ramones' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend"

    • The Ramones, a punk rock band from Queens, New York, released the song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" in 1976 on its self-titled release "Ramones." Unlike their other songs, which are played very fast, "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" is as slow as the songs that inspired it. The song is nothing more than a boy expressing his affection for a girl, saying 'Hey, little girl, I wanna be your boyfriend" and asking her if she loves him too. The song was a reaction to all of the "I Don't Wanna" songs that the band had, like "I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You" and "I Don't Wanna Go Down to the Basement."
