How to Identify Songs on a CD

Whether you have a burned CD full of unknown songs or want to update the media information for a CD on your computer, you'll need to know how to identify songs on a CD. Using the Internet and various programs, you can identify songs on a CD based on melody, lyrics and embedded information.

      Connect to the Internet, insert a CD into an available drive on your computer and play it in a media player. The media player will search the Internet for media information regarding your CD and will display the name, artist, album title and other information on-screen.

      Go to an Internet search engine on your web browser. Type the lyrics to a song on a CD in the empty search bar and perform a search. The search engine will show results pertaining to the lyrics you typed and, if the song is well known enough, will pull up links to lyrics pages. Click on a link to a page that matches the song's lyrics. Many of these pages contain more information about the song such as its songwriter and release date.

      Download, install and open a song identification program like Music Brainz or Tutanic. Insert your CD into an available drive on your computer and use the program's "Lookup" or "Search" feature to identify the songs on the CD and provide information.
