Write a thesis. This involves writing a proposal for essay. It should first cover the subject of the essay, in this case the song lyrics by Paul Simon, followed by the point of view of the essay. An example of this could be to say that the lyrics of "The Boxer" are in fact written autobiographically and relate to Paul Simon's life experiences. This expresses the writer's point of view.
Write the body of the essay by splitting the main subject of the lyrics in to individual subtopics such as Paul Simon's life story and the meaning of particular "Boxer" lyrics. Each subtopic will become a paragraph in the body of the essay. Elaborate on one point at a time in order to create a subtopic paragraph. The length of the body can be as long and as in depth as desired.
Write the introduction. It is generally easier for the writer to do this after having already written the body. The introduction should grab the reader's interest immediately. Achieve this by using an interesting fact or opinion as the opening line of the essay. This could be as simple as "Paul Simon wrote a song to express his admiration for the boxer." This first sentence should be followed directly by an elaboration of the first such as "in 1968 artist Paul Simon wrote the song 'The Boxer,' which was the second song to be recorded by artist duo Simon and Garfunkel." The third sentence should elaborate further. The introduction should be brief, leading on to the thesis.
Add a conclusion after the body of the essay to sum up the main points that have been discussed without repeating any sentences exactly. Adding a few sentences explaining a personal point of view such as how it feels to hear the song "The Boxer" and what thoughts and/or emotions this conjures could be a suitable ending for this essay.
Read through the essay after writing to check for grammatical errors and to ensure that the facts are in the desired order.
