As with most Paper Walls albums, Fighting is dominated by aggressive, thrashing guitars and drums that sometimes overpower the vocals of lead singer Ryan Key and more subtle backing vocal harmonies. The album peaked at No. 13 on the U.S. album chart in 2007.
Various interpretations of the lyrics of Fighting have been offered, and lyrics such as "Said that I'd fight for the one that I've found" suggest that it is a song about relationships. However, Key has said that is actually a tribute to fans of Yellowcard.
Fighting was also included on the soundtrack of the Madden NFL 2008 football video game, along with tracks from the likes of Queens of the Stone Age and Ozzy Osbourne. The Madden series has set a standard for showcasing emerging musical talent and, at that time, had sold 60 million copies of its video games and generated $2 billion in revenue.
