How to Remove Vocals From a Song in Good Quality

Digital audio workstations enable you to record, edit, mix and master your music using your home computer. One of the main benefits of the digital recording environment is the ease with which can alter and modify the recordings. Because you can easily undo an action, you have a lot more freedom to experiment. If you want to use recorded vocals to create a derivative work, such as mashup or remix, it's imperative to remove, or "export" the vocals in as good-quality format as possible. Although you are using the vocals for a new purpose, it's not necessary to completely remove them from the original.

Instructions

  1. Preparation

    • 1

Launch your preferred digital audio workstation, for example Cubase or Logic. Double-click the desktop icon. It may take a few seconds for the program to fully launch.

    • 2

Open the session containing the vocals that you want to remove. Depending on how your digital audio workstation is configured, either the last edited session or a blank session opens automatically on launch. To call up a previous work-in-progress, click "File," and select "Open Recent."

    • 3

Hit "Play" to listen to the track so you can determine which audio file is which.

    Removing One Vocal

    • 4

Select the relevant session from the drop-down menu.

    • 5

Identify the relevant vocal audio track. If there is more than one vocal audio track, for example, if you have backing vocals or harmonies, you need to determine which audio is the correct one. Click "S" on each audio track. This solos the audio, muting all other audio so you can hear it in isolation.

    • 6

Double-click on the vocal audio track name when you have identified it, then rename it to reflect the fact that this is the vocal you are removing. For example, "Lead Vox 1, exported."

    • 7

Export the vocal as a wave audio, or ".wav" file. The specific command varies slightly according to which program you are using, but it is typically performed via the file menu. For example, in Logic, click "File," "Export As" and select "Export as Wav." Wave audio is a lossless, uncompressed file. It is larger than MP3 and therefore takes longer to export, but the audio is uncompressed, preserving the fidelity.

    Removing All Vocals as One

    • 8
Exporting vocals enables you to modify them without altering the originals.

Click on the first vocal track to be removed and select "Send To." Select "Bus 1." In audio terms, a bus is a mixing channel.

    • 9

Click on the vocal track to highlight it, click "Send To" and select "Bus 1." Repeat this process for each vocal track.

    • 10

Click on "Bus 1." Click "File," and select "Export As," select "Export As Wav." When prompted, rename the track "Vox Sub Mix." A sub mix is a collection of multiple audio files, rendered to a single mixing channel.
