Why is Sing Correctional Facility called Sing?

The name "Sing" is derived from the Native American word "sinck," meaning "stone" or "flint." The area around the prison was originally inhabited by the Sinckhanne (or Esopus) tribe, who used the land for hunting and fishing. The name "Sing Sing" was first applied to the prison in the early 19th century, and it has been in use ever since.
