Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001) was an American singer, actress, and dancer. She was born in Brooklyn, New York, and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Aaliyah began her career at the age of 12, when she was signed to Jive Records. She released her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number, in 1994, which was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Aaliyah's second album, One in a Million, was released in 1996 and was certified triple platinum by the RIAA. She has sold an estimated 32 million albums worldwide.
Aaliyah was also an actress, appearing in the films Romeo Must Die (2000) and Queen of the Damned (2002). She died in a plane crash in the Bahamas on August 25, 2001.
