What does rampart mean from the national anthem?

In the United States national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner," the word "rampart" means a large defensive wall, especially one surrounding a fort or castle.

The line, "Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?." refers to the American flag flying proudly above the ramparts during a battle.
