How to Become a Voice Instructor

Properly training the voice to sing properly is an important skill that even talented singers must learn. The various nuances needed to maintain proper control and quality are not to be taken lightly and depend largely on the expertise and skill of the instructor. Many vocalists know the importance of proper instruction, so they aspire to become voice instructors.

      Start by taking voice instruction lessons to learn the basic structure of a voice lesson. You can do this through your academic studies or on a private basis. Pay attention to how the teacher begins each lesson, and relates to you as a student.

      Take notes on the things that you enjoyed about your previous voice lessons and integrate these elements into your personal teaching method. Take a vocal pedagogy class to learn the basics of vocal instruction, including warm-up exercises, breathing techniques and repertoire standards.

      Learn how to play the piano at least marginally, as it will help you accompany students as they play warm ups. Ensure that you are well versed in the basics of breathing, tone quality, vibrato, reading music and interpretation of music; attend some master classes and never stop learning yourself.

      Advertise your services to local schools, including colleges and community colleges. Also take some information to music stores and network, or apply for vocal assistant positions at local universities.

      Create a resume that lists your qualifications to teach voice lessons that will accompany any other information about lessons. such as location of your studio, prices, and contact information.

      Teach only a few students to begin with and work to raise their level of skill. Work exclusively to ready your few students for a recital at which they can showcase their skills and thus bring more business to your studio instruction.
