How to Have Stage Presence in Female Voice Training

Poor stage presence can wreck the performance of even the most talented singer. Use energy and motion in your body to convey not only the idea of the song, but your confidence and personality to the audience.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a song that you have an emotional connection with. Performers develop stage presence when they have a genuine reaction to the song on an emotional level.

    • 2

Practice your song diligently. The more comfortable you are with the technical aspects of your singing, the less you have to worry about them during your performance. If you are confident in your range and the lyrics before you sing in public, you can focus more on your stage presence.

    • 3

Explore various facial expressions that help convey the idea and emotion of the song you are singing. Practice your facial expressions in a mirror to make sure you are expressing what you intend. Your expressions should match the size of your venue. Smaller, more subtle expressions are suitable for intimate performances, but you need more drama when you are performing in a big space.

    • 4

Energize your body. Allowing your hands to hang limply at your sides and your shoulders to sag has a negative effect on your performance. Concentrate on making your body feel alive as you perform and include gestures that reflect the tone and mood of your song.

    • 5

Move about the stage as you sing. Some songs lend themselves to a lot of movement, while others songs require you to be mostly still. Almost all songs can use some movement in the climactic moments for emphasis. However, do not pace back and forth mindlessly, as this indicates nervousness. Each movement you make should be justified by the song.
