How to Work the Stage During a Performance

No matter how long you've been in the music industry, hitting the stage can be a nerve wracking experience, so much so, that a person may opt to just stand there and not move.Mariah Carey is a case in point of how important stage work is. Applauded for stellar pitch perfect vocals, people complain that a live performance is akin to watching paint dry. Likewise, Barbara Streisand and Cher both experience anxiety so debilitating that they have been reported to have anxiety attacks prior to their shows.Unlike Mariah Carey and Streisand however, Cher manages to push past her fears to deliver performances that have made her adored by her fans.

Great performers know that the secret to a good show is to make eye contact with the crowd. Staring off into space or looking at the ground will make the audience feel as if you just aren't into it. Even if you are giving a brilliant vocal performance, your audience won't be pulled into your world. Find one or three members in the crowd to "sing to" it would make it appear as if you're connecting with spectators.

Make big movements and gestures, even if you feel a bit silly. Why? Because when you are on stage, even a small one, most people really can't see you. Dancing around, using your hands, even swinging your head, can make you appear as if you are really into your song.

Wearing the right kind of costume can be the main catalyst of a great stage performance and can make or break audience reaction. For instance, no one will take a rock singer seriously if he is dressed in a tasseled cowboy outfit. Like in any aspect of life, clothes can make the man, and our attire says a lot about us. Feeling like we well represent our music will make us confident, which will carry over into your stage presence

Don't be afraid to get into it, in fact, people go nuts when they can tell you are really feeling your tunes. In the industry, we call it "getting ugly with it!" This simply means that you shouldn't be afraid to "mess up your hair or nails" as it were, when it comes to putting on a good show. Prowl the stage, working it left to right, and making sure you head down center stage as well. Even at your most nervous, always try your best to appear confident—confidence can make a mediocre singer grab a crowd whereas a brilliant singer, who just stands there, won't fully capture the attention of the audience.Work your mic at all times, making sure you are aware of where it is in relation to your mouth—if you over power it, it can feedback and ruin the performance. You can avoid this by moving the mic several inches away from your mouth when you hit a big note.
