How to Sing Better With Larynx Control

Professional singers know that singing requires more than just a gifted vocalist opening his mouth and magically producing deep, rich sounds. Part of the training singers undergo requires them to learn how to become aware of certain body parts, like the larynx, and to control them to improve the quality, depth and range of their voices. Learn to sing better by controlling your larynx, as the following steps explain.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your finger over the Adam's apple in your throat. Get a feel for the larynx by yawning and saying, "Ahhhhhh." Notice how the larynx moves down toward the center of your throat as you do this, producing a richer tone of voice. You must strive to maintain the larynx in this center position as you sing.

    • 2

Stay conscious of your larynx's position in the throat as you do your usual breathing exercises. Stand erect and hold your finger on your larynx. Exhale slowly from the bottom of the stomach, maintaining a center throat larynx position throughout.

    • 3

Use larynx control as you sing scales. Start by finding your larynx's position and singing the scales as you normally do. If the larynx pushes up toward the top of the throat, open your mouth wider, relaxing the throat until the larynx pushes down toward the middle. Continue singing the scales, maintaining awareness of the larynx's position.

    • 4

Practice larynx control as you sing phrases to improve diction. Sing, "how are you" first in a baby's voice, noticing how high the larynx pushes up the throat, causing a nasal tone. Repeat singing this phrase with a more relaxed, open throat. Notice how the larynx naturally pushes down, centering in the throat and causing your voice to deepen into a more pleasing tone.
