DIY Microphone Stand

With technology allowing people to now be rock stars and broadcasters in their living rooms, you may find yourself in the need of a microphone stand. You could go to a music store and buy one, but unless you have a need for an industrial model that many people will see, it's a much better idea to make your own. Building your own microphone stand is extremely easy to do and can be done for a minimal cost.
  1. Supplies

    • The pieces of this stand will vary depending on how high you want to make it. You will need a piece of 3/4-inch plywood in a square for the base. For a small, table top microphone stand, a 4-inch-by-4-inch piece of wood will work. If you are going to build a full 5-foot stand, increase the size of the plywood to support the bigger height (a piece approximately 1-foot-by-1-foot should be sufficient for a full-size microphone). Also, you will need a length of PVC pipe. The PVC pipe follows the same principle: If you are building a small 18-inch stand, 3/4-inch PVC pipe will work. For a higher stand, go up to 1 1/4-inch PVC pipe, which will help stabilize the stand. You will also need a 3/4-inch split T, floor flange and screwed socket adapters. The sizes of the flange and the adapters will depend on the size of the pipe.

    Building the Stand

    • Place the wood on the ground and screw the floor flange to the center of the wood. Screw one of the adapters to the floor flange, making sure it is tight (a loose socket can cause your microphone stand to tip over). Place the length of PVC pipe in the adapter so it is sticking up from the wood. Next, place the other adapter on top of the PVC pipe. Watch out for this adapter because the split T needs to be 3/4-inch (this is the best size to hold the microphone); you may need an adapter that is the size of your PVC pipe on one end and 3/4-inch on the other. Once you place the adapter on the pipe, screw in the bottom of the split T so the open part is on top of the stand. This T should be the perfect size to hold your microphone.
