How to Become a Really Good Singer

Becoming a really good singer involves mastering your production of sounds via air passages in your throat, nose and head, which are known collectively as the pharynx. Many musicians have a preferred register, although really good singers can shift from register to register without apparent difficulty. The audience must also be engaged by the force of emotion conveyed through the singer's voice. To master their craft, singers should focus on mastering both their physical instrument and their emotional projection.

Instructions

    • 1

Focus on developing your manipulation of air through your pharynx. Develop your head, middle, falsetto and chest registers separately to increase vocal power and range. Choose a register that feels natural. Practice notes in this register, until you can move fluidly and naturally from note to the next. Focus on the note, not the register; shifting between registers is less important than producing clear notes.

Rehearse material that engages you personally. Sing songs with lyrics that you find compelling or arrangements that best suit your particular vocal range. Singing songs that affect you personally allows you to develop your stage presence and personality; by being engaged with the material, you can focus on projecting your emotions through your voice. Request another evaluation by a professional vocal coach to determine if you may stage a live performance.

    • 3

Perform your chosen material in front of a live audience. Note how the audience reacts to your performance. Attempt to move your audience to applause by shifting effortlessly from note to note while projecting genuine emotion. Prepare yourself for constructive criticism. Continue performing until your audience reacts with genuine passion.
