How to Take Care of a Singer's Throat

For professional singers, taking care of one's throat is a integral part of life. Negligence or bad habits can severely affect a persons ability to sing well and can eventually lead to the singing voice being permanently altered. By following several basic tips, the throat can keep itself in good condition, allowing a singer to sound her best when performing.

Instructions

    • 1

Limit the amount of alcoholic or caffeinated beverages to a minimum. These types of beverages lead the drinker to urinate more often, drying out the body and leading to a loss of voice.

    • 2

Drink six to eight glasses of water a day to stay hydrated. This will help to ensure that your voice does not dry out.

    • 3

Avoid spicy foods, as they can cause stomach acid to move into the throat, damaging the vocal chords.

    • 4

Exercise regularly to build up stamina and muscle tone. This will also help you to hold proper posture when singing, which improves breathing and leads to stronger singing.

    • 5

Eat lots of fruits, grains and vegetables. These foods are rich in the vitamins needed to keep the mucus membranes of the throat healthy.

    • 6

Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly to help avoid catching a cold or flu. Colds and flu can cause an excess of mucus to build up in the throat, which can lead to damaging the vocal chords.

    • 7

Avoid talking in a raised voice. Talking above a natural level can cause the vocal chords to strain.
