This nine-day, mid-July intensive workshop offers high school students over 16 years of age daily master classes in performance, diction, style, song interpretation, acting, phrasing and textual communication, as well as preparation for auditions, stage deportment and characterizations. Tuition is $600 and housing is $525 per person for a double dorm room.
Interlochen offers 9th through 12th graders a four-week program from late June to late July at a cost of $5,400. Admission is highly competitive, and an audition portfolio is required. Classes include private voice, vocal diction, acting and stage movement, music history, music literature and opera workshop. A small number of need-based and merit-based scholarships are available.
The two-month Summer School Voice Program runs from mid-June to mid-August and is limited to 23 singer-fellows between 18 and 35 years of age. It is a full-scholarship program, offering enrolled fellows free tuition, room and board. The program offers coaching in diction, singing technique, style, song interpretation and presentation. Fellows also participate in more than 190 musical events, such as chamber music performances, recitals, a fully staged opera, and orchestra concerts.
This two-week program runs the second and third weeks in July and is for high school students age 15 through 18 interested in singing in classical and musical theater styles. Classes include private voice lessons, diction, vocal performance, vocal coaching, theory, sight-singing and ear training. The intensive is constructed to hone performance skills in a short time. The cost of tuition is $2,035, plus housing at $750 and meals at $475.
The Institute for Young Dramatic Voices offers a multi-leveled, three-week intensive summer program in July. It gives young singers with strong and unique voices the opportunity to study one-on-one with specialized coaches, opera experts and voice teachers. They accept beginners with no experience as well as those with considerable training. As students gain skills they are assigned roles of increasing importance in a more advanced program that includes more intensive instruction and participation in an opera scenes program. Enrollment is limited. Room and board are approximately $1,000, and tuition is free for most levels.
The Opera Institute is a three-week summer program for outstanding young singers and pianists, ages 15 to 18. It runs from mid-June to early July. Classes include acting, breath support, opera history, individual vocal coaching, Italian diction, ear training and sight-singing. Auditions are held in Los Angeles in January, and in Washington, D.C. in February, and require a rendition of two art songs, one in Italian. Tuition is $1,900 and housing is $1,500. Some partial and full scholarships for tuition only are available.
